The Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society 2001 Award

Dr. Wei-Jao Chen

National Taiwan University

In Taiwan, Dr. Wei-Jao Chen has pioneered clinical nutrition research and the practice of nutrition management. In 1986, a team of specialists in clinical nutrition developed collaborative research, applied it, and formed internaitonal exchanges in clinical nutrition under the leadership of Dr. Chen. In 1992, the Taiwan Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition was founded with Dr. Chen as its first President for two terms, promoting research, education and technical training in clinical nutrition in Taiwan. During his 4 years as President, the Society established guidelines and organizational principles to help district hospitals set up Nutrition Support Teams, and to develop training and research. He has since been the Society's Honorary President. Dr. Chen has provided international linkages for the Taiwan Society through involvement in European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He is a founding member of the Editorial Board of the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition and a member of the Editorial Board of Nutrition. He has published over 150 articles on clinical nutrition. He became President of the National Taiwan University in 1993; and, in this and through his several professional roles in paediatrics, surgery and clinical nutrition, in teaching and research, he has provided outstanding leadership in the Asia-Pacific region
